20 Burning Questions about SCANDAL

There are days when I wish I could be a grasshopper on the floor of the SCANDAL writers' room. Then, there are others when I'm content to live on this side of the screen along with the rest of you in Gladiator Land wondering what will happen next. As an obsessed fan, however, I wait with bated breath for them to reveal more about the back stories of our favorite characters.

Here are 20 burning questions that won't let me rest until I know the answers. I'm sure I'll have many more very soon. Let me know what burning questions you have in the comments section below.

1. Why does Olivia allow so many random people into her home unsupervised? Let's see: there was her boyfriend's plaything Amanda Tanner, a bearded and un-bathed Huck, a depressed Quinn, and the White House staffer she sent to fetch her clothes after President Grant was shot. She doesn't strike me as someone who would be so trusting. Does that seem odd to anyone else?

2. Does Liv really keep pictures of herself and President Grant in her office? Um...I guess she's never heard the rules laid out in Naughty by Nature's "O.P.P."

Busted!
3. Since we're on the subject, who honestly believes that all of DC doesn't already know about Olitz? The town isn't that big, especially in certain circles. If Justice Thornton could hone in on them by just being in their presence, a city filled with philandering politicians definitely would be talking.

We can see you!

4. Will Stephen ever come back? He seemed to be the most stable Gladiator (that's not saying much, I know), even with his womanizing ways. He offered a great balance for Olivia, and he knew how to handle her. He also would have been the best choice (sorry, Harrison) to act as her surrogate when she returned to the White House.

5. Where did Liv attend undergrad? I imagine the greatest school in all the land--HOWARD UNIVERSITY. It makes perfect sense, right?

6. What's Olivia's initial connection to Huck? Did she work for the CIA or FBI before her White House and OPA days? In episode 103, her rapist client asks who she works for now, and he lists those two agencies as options.

7. Did Fitz really buy Amanda Tanner the dog that she named Thomas Jefferson? He cleverly averted Olivia's question in season 1.

8. Speaking of Amanda...why did she act as though she didn't know who Olivia was the day she got ripped in the park? Is it possible that a former Sally Langston campaign volunteer turned White House aide had no idea about the Great Olivia Pope? They crossed paths in episode 106 when Amanda handed her a flyer during a joint Grant-Langston campaign event. Then, Olivia proceeded to decimate Sally's quest for president. Somebody, please help me with this one.

9. I know most of you aren't crazy about their relationship, but what's the low down on Olivia's and Edison's past? They were engaged and lived together at one point, but their interactions seem so dry compared to her and Fitz. Is it really love?

10. What was Billy Chambers's grudge against the Grant administration? Was it only about losing the campaign? He seemed to go through a great deal of trouble just to bring them down. Perhaps he was touched in the head.

Fitz: Et tu, Billy?

11. Is Cyrus still beefing with Livvy for getting it in with Fitz? He's way too invested in the President's sex life. Unrequited love, maybe?

12. Will someone practice new game face techniques with Quinn, please?! She got read by Harrison, Huck, and Gideon in one episode for not being able to keep a poker face while lying. Help this child! While they're at it, can Secret Service agents Tom and Hal join them? If those two aren't the snitching-est mofos on the planet!

Huh? What?
13. Olivia has Huck; Cyrus has Charlie; Mellie has the Secret Service. Why is Hollis Doyle still slithering around the earth?

14. In season 1, we learned that Olivia single-handedly broke the kneecaps of Abby's husband with a tire iron for abusing her. Will we get to see her beat somebody's ass on screen?

15. Does Fitz realize that his right-hand man Cyrus plays him like a harp? I'm a bit rusty on my Shakespearean tragedies, but their relationship feels a bit Othello-and-Iago-ish. I now feel the need to read all the assignments I skipped during a severe case of high school senioritis. My AP English teacher would be proud.

16. How many bones are buried in Cyrus's garden? He has admitted that he hates working in it, so why does he spend so much time playing in the dirt?

17. What is Quinn's super power? All the other Gladiators have one. Olivia relies on her gut. Harrison talks slick and possesses a strong audible memory (remember the black box recording from the plane crash in season 1?). Abby knows how to work her way around a crime scene. And Huck? Well...he has an affinity for technology and "whiskey." Aside from relieving Olivia of her guilty conscience, why is Quinn there?

18. Does Olivia pay the elevator operators in OPA's building to keep their mouths shut? They see almost everyone who comes and goes in the office. What keeps them from snitching?

19. Why doesn't Charlie take out Huck? He had the perfect chance when the B-613 spies had their family reunion. Why didn't he take advantage of it?

20. Who the hell is Olivia Carolyn Pope?! REALLY?!

Olivia Pope

  1. I think Quinn's super power is being or should I say "playing the innocent dingy role". in actuality she's being attentive to detail, she is putting the puzzle pieces together of "how she ended up as Quinn.

Cyrus is a monster but I still say he is out for the best interest of Fitz even if he tear down liv-the love of Fitz life.

Someone else mentioned that about Quinn, too. She's gotten better this season, but her innocent act is getting old. I think we'll see her grow a bit more over the next few episodes.

  3. I love this show. The writing is ingenious and second to none with respect to the unveiling of each character. The tangled web woven is being defined within its layers where certain strands are stronger than others. My burning question is who does Olivia Pope turn to when there is no one she can confide in? Where is here shrink?

I wonder about her support system, too. The closest person she had to lean on was Stephen, and now he's gone. I don't think any of the other Gladiators can handle what she deals with, at least not yet. It'll be interesting to see how she holds up during the situations with Fitz and Huck. I hope she doesn't have a nervous breakdown.

    2. It seems to me that she confides in Cyrus a lot. Although unbeknownst to her not a good move. I think he has untouched levels of evil.

    3. Liv and Cyrus have a long-standing friendship, so their bond is deeper than we've seen on the show so far. I'm pretty sure he mentored her early in her career or while she was in school. I hope the writers explore their connection more.

  4. Wonder who called news station after POTUS shooting? Sounded like an amateur and someone involved in shooting. The anchorman had to ask them to speak up. Like they were whispering and muffled the phone.

Also, Edison was too interested in whether Fitzgerald was alive while going into bunker, and he was the first to congratulate Sally Langston as Madame president ..whats up with that?

    1. Thanks for your questions!

A reporter who was covering the event probably called the station and had to yell over all the chaos. That tends to happen in situations like that.

Edison should have been concerned about Fitz. As a Congressman, he's expected to help lead the country through times of crisis.

I don't remember him being the first to congratulate Sally. I need to watch that episode again. It may have been just a formality for his role in the Senate.

  5. Do you think Stephen knew about Liv's relationship with the president? He'd often give knowing looks when they talked about Fitz. I miss Stephen. Fun blog about a great show!

    1. Thanks for posting!

Stephen definitely knew. When they were dealing with Amanda Tanner, he actually said to Liv, "You can't have him." Too bad we'll never know how he found out about it. It makes me wonder who else in the office knows.

I think Edison suspects something went on between them, but he hasn't had the courage to confront Liv about it.

    2. Huck knows. He said to her, "I don't tell you who to love!'

  6. good catch re: stephen. I wish we knew how he knew.

Re:prior post...Edison became the majority ( or minority?) leader so that was likely why he was with sally. Oh, I agree it seems like Edison suspects something with Olivia and Fitz.

  7. The story line is definitely hot, hot, hot. But it's OK for a beautiful, gifted and prosperous African American female to love an equally beautiful, gifted and prosperous African American male. As a matter of fact, its a very good look. We don't see it on TV enough. I know she will eventually start sneakin' around with the prez again, but Edison is easy on the eyes and very sexy. He has a certain pedigree that adds strength to any woman's gene pool, you feel me?

  8. The chemistry between Olivia and the president is really real. I mean really, during some of the sexy scenes I found myself holding my breath and doing Kegels - Sish! Shondra Rhimes has the best caster in the business. If I ask this question please don't get angry because I wonder. Do you think the sexy chemistry between the two characters is, in part, based on the fact that she is black and he is white? I mean it's definitely not taboo anymore. I think they have a true affection for one another in reality.

You're right. We don't see enough black on black love on TV. Edison doesn't do it for me though. I don't think he does it for Liv either. He's safe. He's familiar. He's boring. She needs someone who's exciting and challenges her every day. Fitz does that, but he's married.

Liv and the president do have ridiculous chemistry. I don't know if being interracial has anything to do with it. I know some pretty "uninspiring" interracial couples. I think they're just great actors. Some of Kerry Washington's other love scenes have been just as steamy.

Low-key, I'd like to see her with another love interest or two. I know she has plenty of suitors.

    2. this show is not about black on black it's about two people very much inlove with each other.

    3. One of the things I appreciate about the show is that it's never been an issue the fact that they are an interracial couple (except for the one jefferson/sally hemmings line). Instead it's about the people. For that matter, it's never been an issue that Olivia is a strong black woman...instead she is a strong woman (professionally) . I heard that Shonda casts without regard to race ... she just casts to fit the character. This explains why her casts on all her shows are all so diverse. Love that!

    4. I agree!! I dont see black or white...I see a man and a woman. Their relationship reminds me a lot of Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner's characters from The Bodyguard.

  9. I thought Edison was voted Majority leader in the Senate. Which places him 4th in succession behind the VP and Speaker of the House right? Thats why the secret service put him in the bunker with out informing him of Fitz's status. That's why he called Liv on the move.

He was voted majority leader, but that doesn't necessarily put him in line to become president unless he's also the Senate President pro tempore. The latter is usually decided by seniority based on length of service.

I don't know how Scandal's writers imagined it though.

    1. This is an obsession for me, so I notice more than a normal viewer would. :)

I think I was pausing and rewinding my DVD and it caught my eye. That's not a smart move for Liv, but she's never in her right mind when it comes to Fitz.

    2. Thats true she does get a little side tracked when it comes to him but those pictures are ones that she would be able to explain. They are enough to mean something to her and Fitz if they were looking at them but innocent enough to explain away to some random person.

      Delete
    3. But they're the only pictures in her office. No pics of herself or the Gladiators or her family. Just her and Fitz. That would take more than a little bit of explaining.

  11. I love this show and so glad I saw Oprah interviewing Shonda or I would not have known about Scandal and how good it is..like Oprah said..it's my new favorite show..(she probably always says that)..however, I mean it! I don't care for Quinn's charcter, too immature for the rest of the group but I know there is a method behind all the madness and I love it!

Oprah has live tweeted the show at least once, so she probably means it.

  12. Let me tackle a few of these:
    10. Yes, he wanted Sally Langston to be president that badly. He believed she had the moral/religious high ground. He really did plot that long to overthrow the Grant administration.

Why is Quinn there? Its less about her utility and more about Olivia wanting to save her.

    3. It's one thing to KNOW and another to KKNNOOWW (i.e. prove). Lots of people may know or think they know, but I don't think anyone has proof. Although, getting into the bed at the hospital certainly didn't help to hide things.

  13. Who else noticed the scene where Olivia, Harrison and Abby deliberately used the same deodorant stick at work??? Huck refused to use it though lol. what was that about? publicity stunt or just random?
